Object Name Archival Collection
Scope & Content The National League of American Pen Women Collection, Sacramento Branch, consists of scrapbooks, artifacts, and documents dealing with the activities of the local Sacramento Branch; the regional district of Northern California, or NorCal; and the NLAPW Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The collection spans a period from 1925 to 2003, with the majority of the material created between 1960 and 1990. It includes newsletters, membership rosters, meeting agendas and minutes, event programs and information, bylaws, charters, correspondence, sheet music, photographs, and a gavel. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, photographs, ephemers and information on events.

The subject matter is arranged into eight series: 1. Administrative Documents, Sacramento Branch; 2. Administrative Documents, NorCal; 3. National Organization of the NLAPW; 4. Organization Activities, Sacramento Branch; 5. Artifacts; 6. Scrapbooks; 7. Oversized Materials; and 8. Photographs.

The first series is divided into subseries according to operational papers and functional duties of the executive officers and various committees: Charters; Events; Historian; Hospitality; Newsletters, Penline; Presidents' Reports; Secretary; Treasurer.

The second series, dealing with NorCal, consists of the following subseries: Bylaws; Events; Newsletters, NorCal News; Secretary; Treasurer.

The third series contains information involving the national headquarters; Correspondence; Events; Handbook; National Journal, The Pen Women; Treasurer.

The fourth series contains three subseries specific to the NLAPW's Mission: Arts, Letters, and Music.

The fifth series consists of an original gavel form teh Sacramento Branch President and a ribbon.

The sixth series is made up of four intact scrapbooks kept within three seperate boxes (Boxes 2-4): 1925-1934; 1962-1969; 1967-1978; and 1978-1984. Loose material and ephemera from these scrapbooks are stored in the first series under the subseries of Historian (Box 1). For preservation purposes, the unbound contents of three other scrapbooks are contained within file folders in that same subseries of HIstorian: 1984-1988; 1989-1992; and 1993-1997.

The seventh series contains oversized materials and includes a copy of the original 1925 Charter for the Sacramento Branch as well as a "Proclamation of Penwomen Day" by the Mayor of Sacramento for the Branch's fiftieth anniversary in 1975.

The eighth and final series contains photographs and negatives stored in the photo archives and extracted from the scrapbooks, from NorCal and Headquarters Events folders, and form an unidentified Art Exhibit.
